We Were Sinking. I Let Her Go’: The Perils of Women’s Migration to Europe by Boat

In the perilous journey from Africa to Europe, many women are risking their lives on overcrowded boats, driven by the hope of a better future. One harrowing account from a survivor of a capsized boat off the coast of Spain’s Canary Islands in May 2025 recounts the moment she had to let go of her daughter to save herself. The boat, carrying over 100 people, overturned during a rescue operation, leading to the deaths of seven individuals, including four women and three girls. The tragedy underscores the extreme dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean and Atlantic routes.

The Atlantic route, particularly to the Canary Islands, has become increasingly perilous. In June 2023, a rubber dinghy sank off the coast of the Canaries, resulting in the deaths of 35 to 39 people. The victims were among many who had embarked on the journey seeking a better life, only to meet a tragic end. The route has seen a rise in fatalities, with over 10,000 deaths recorded in the previous year. Despite the dangers, many continue to undertake the journey, driven by desperation and the hope of reaching Europe.

Similarly, in the English Channel, the perilous crossings persist. In April 2024, an overcrowded inflatable boat set out from northern France towards the UK. The boat, carrying over 100 people, faced difficulties shortly after departure. Five individuals, including a young child, died during the crossing, either from drowning or being trampled in the chaos. The incident highlights the ongoing risks migrants face in their attempts to reach Europe.

These tragedies are not isolated. In December 2022, two migrant women, one of whom was five months pregnant, drowned in the Aegean Sea after being abandoned by Greek coast guards. The survivors reported that the Greek authorities had dismantled their boat’s engine and towed them away with a rope, causing the vessel to leak and eventually capsize. The incident sparked outrage and calls for accountability regarding the treatment of migrants at sea.

The stories of these women reflect the broader crisis of migration to Europe. Despite the dangers, many continue to embark on these treacherous journeys, driven by the hope of a better life. The international community faces increasing pressure to address the root causes of migration and to ensure the safety and dignity of those seeking refuge.
