Israel has shown “unprecedented disregard for human rights” in Gaza, according to the UN human rights chief on February 26, 2025. The statement, made at a UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva, cited the high number of civilian deaths, destruction of infrastructure, and humanitarian crisis caused by Israeli military operations.
“The scale of civilian casualties is deeply alarming,” the UN official said. Reports estimate that over 29,000 Palestinians have died since the conflict escalated in October 2023.
Gaza’s infrastructure has suffered severe damage, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble. At least 70% of residential buildings, hospitals, and schools have been destroyed or rendered uninhabitable.
Water and electricity shortages have worsened, leaving millions without access to basic necessities. The destruction of sewage and water treatment facilities has increased the risk of disease outbreaks.
“Gaza’s hospitals are no longer functioning,” an aid worker stated. Health facilities have been overwhelmed with casualties while running out of medical supplies.
The World Health Organization has recorded at least 521 deaths in healthcare-related attacks. These include the deaths of 16 medical workers and the destruction of 137 medical facilities.
The UN report also accused Hamas of violating international law by launching rockets into Israeli civilian areas. These attacks have resulted in deaths and injuries, further escalating the conflict.
Israel has defended its actions, claiming its operations target Hamas militants and military sites. The government insists that precautions are taken to minimize harm to civilians.
The UN report calls for independent investigations into alleged violations by both sides. Concerns over war crimes and excessive use of force have led to calls for accountability.
“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating rapidly,” an international aid group stated. Shortages of food, medicine, and clean water have placed millions at risk.
International pressure has grown, with several countries urging an immediate ceasefire. Negotiations continue, but no agreement has been reached to halt hostilities.
Thousands of displaced Palestinians remain in overcrowded shelters. Many have no access to sanitation, increasing the spread of disease.
Economic damage is severe, with Gaza’s economy nearly collapsing. The destruction of businesses and infrastructure has left thousands unemployed and dependent on aid.
Mental health professionals report a rise in trauma cases. Continuous exposure to airstrikes and violence has left many, especially children, suffering from psychological distress.
Efforts to send humanitarian aid have been hindered by border restrictions. Aid agencies have struggled to deliver essential supplies due to ongoing military operations.
Calls for an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic resolution continue to grow. The UN has urged both parties to de-escalate and prioritize civilian safety.
The UN report warns that failure to address the crisis could lead to long-term instability. Without urgent intervention, the humanitarian situation is expected to worsen.
