LONDON, The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and defence technology firm QinetiQ have announced a £160 MILLION initiative to fast-track the development of next-generation directed energy weapons, including the cutting-edge DragonFire laser system.
This ambitious program aims to equip the UK Armed Forces with revolutionary laser weapons capable of neutralizing drones, missiles, and other threats at the speed of light, marking a significant leap forward in the country’s military technology.
Defence Minister John Healey stated:
“Investing in innovative capabilities like directed energy weapons ensures the UK remains at the forefront of defence technology, protecting our personnel and strengthening our deterrence.”
The DragonFire system, developed with funding from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), has already demonstrated promising results in trials, showcasing precision targeting and rapid engagement capabilities with minimal collateral damage.
QinetiQ CEO Steve Wadey emphasized the partnership’s importance:
“This funding accelerates critical R&D efforts, bringing laser weapon systems closer to operational deployment and enhancing the UK’s strategic advantage.”
The initiative is part of a broader UK defence modernization effort, focusing on cybersecurity, autonomous systems, and advanced sensors alongside directed energy.
Experts suggest these investments will position the UK to respond effectively to emerging threats in contested environments, from the Indo-Pacific to European theatres.
The programme’s first operational deployments are anticipated by the early 2030s, pending further testing and integration.
