The United Kingdom has initiated its most significant naval deployment in recent years with the launch of Operation Highmast, an eight-month global mission led by the Royal Navy’s flagship, HMS Prince of Wales. This operation underscores the UK’s commitment to international security and its strategic partnerships across the globe.
Deployment Overview
Departing from Portsmouth on April 22, 2025, the Carrier Strike Group 25 (CSG25) comprises a formidable assembly of naval assets, including:
- HMS Prince of Wales: Equipped with up to 24 F-35B Lightning II jets, marking the largest maritime deployment of these fifth-generation stealth fighters to date.
- HMS Dauntless (Type 45 destroyer) and HMS Richmond (Type 23 frigate): Providing air defense and anti-submarine capabilities.
- An Astute-class submarine: Enhancing undersea warfare and intelligence operations.
- Support vessels from allied nations, including HMCS Ville de Québec (Canada), Méndez Núñez (Spain), and ships from Norway.
The deployment is supported by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s RFA Tidespring, ensuring sustained operations through underway replenishment.
Strategic Objectives
Operation Highmast aims to:
- Enhance interoperability with NATO and Indo-Pacific allies through joint exercises and operations.
