Syria Establishes New Commissions for Transitional Justice and Missing Persons

Human Rights

Damascus  Following the ouster of former president Bashar al-Assad, Syria has launched two significant new commissions aimed at addressing human rights abuses from its 13-year civil war.

The National Transitional Justice Commission will investigate serious violations committed during the conflict and pursue accountability for perpetrators. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Missing Persons will work to uncover the fate of over 100,000 individuals who remain missing.

The United Nations Independent Institution on Missing Persons has welcomed these efforts as a vital step toward justice, reconciliation, and healing for Syrian society after years of devastating war.

International human rights groups have called for sustained support to ensure the commissions’ effectiveness and transparency.
