Trudeau’s suspension of Parliament has killed his plan to strip pro-life pregnancy centres of their charity status. Canada’s top pro-life group welcomed this as ‘excellent news.’ Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s shutting of parliament ends his plan to strip pro-life pregnancy centres of their charity status. Canada’s top pro-life and pro-family group welcomed this as “excellent news.”
“Trudeau’s announcement to resign and prorogue Parliament means that all government bills and unfinished business are terminated,” wrote CLC’s Pete Baklinski on X Tuesday. “This means that Trudeau’s plan to attack pro-life pregnancy centers has died on the list of upcoming business. His legislation would strip them of their charitable status if they refused to support his abortion politics.”
On Monday morning, Trudeau announced he will resign as Liberal Party leader once a new leader is chosen. This means he is still serving as PM. But, all parliamentary business has stopped. Canadian politicos rejoiced at the news. However, many felt he should have resigned and called an election at the same time. The Liberal Party will hold a leadership race to choose a new head. That person will be Canada’s next prime minister by default.
The Liberal government of Trudeau promised a law. It would strip pro-life pregnancy centers of their charitable tax status. Canadian Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth Marci Ien recently tabled the bill The finance department said the bill would require “registered charities that provide services, advice, or information in respect of the prevention, preservation, or termination of pregnancy [i.e., destroying the unborn]” to disclose that they “do not provide specific services, including abortions or birth control.”
The government claimed that, “under this legislation, a registered charity that provides reproductive health services would need to disclose if, at a minimum, it does not provide the contact information for an abortion vendor and a birth control vendor.” Most pro-life charities that help women already state they do not offer or refer for abortions. CLC’s President Jeff Gunnarson told LifeSiteNews last year that Trudeau’s new rules will unfairly scrutinize these groups and spread misinformation from abortion-activist organizations, which falsely claim they aren’t transparent.
Other troublesome bills, like Trudeau’s “Online Harms Act,” also died as parliament was suspended. For years, Trudeau has claimed to support abortion. He was baptized Catholic. Since taking office in 2015, his Liberal government has proposed pro-abortion policies.
