Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority Agree to Improve Refugee Camp Conditions

Politics & Government

Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority have reached a significant agreement aimed at enhancing the living conditions of Palestinian refugees residing in Lebanon. The accord was formalized during a meeting between Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Beirut on May 22, 2025. The discussions focused on extending Lebanese governmental authority over Palestinian refugee camps, addressing the presence of unauthorized weapons, and improving the social and legal rights of refugees.

Approximately 250,000 Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon’s overcrowded camps, where various Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Fatah, are active. Lebanese officials have expressed concerns about the influence of these groups within the camps and have called for the disarmament of unauthorized weapons to ensure national security. President Abbas’s visit underscores a commitment to cooperation between Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority to address these issues.

The Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee (LPDC), established in 2005, plays a pivotal role in coordinating policies and initiatives to improve the living conditions of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. The LPDC’s mandate includes facilitating dialogue between Lebanese authorities and Palestinian factions, addressing humanitarian needs, and promoting the rights of refugees.

This agreement marks a positive step towards enhancing the welfare of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and fostering stronger cooperation between Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority.
