The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) continue their efforts to develop the country’s defense capabilities, even as a freeze on certain US security assistance remains in effect. Officials affirmed their commitment to strengthening national defense through various avenues. They are exploring alternative funding and partnerships.

The freeze on US aid, related to concerns about human rights issues, has presented challenges to the AFP’s modernization plans. However, the DND and AFP have decided to proceed with key projects. They are focusing on self-reliance and diversifying their sources of support.

“We are committed to pursuing our modernization goals, regardless of temporary setbacks,” stated DND Spokesperson Arsenio Andolong in a press conference on February 12, 2025. “We will continue to work with our allies and explore all available options to enhance our defense capabilities.” He emphasized the nation’s resolve.

The AFP is prioritizing the development of its territorial defense capabilities, including maritime security and air defense. These areas are crucial for protecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The focus is on strengthening the nation’s ability to defend itself.

The DND is exploring alternative funding sources, including increased allocations from the national budget. It is also seeking partnerships with countries beyond the US. Diversification is key to its strategy.

“We are actively engaging with other nations that share our security interests,” added Andolong. “These partnerships are essential for acquiring the necessary equipment and technology.” He highlighted the importance of international cooperation.

The AFP’s modernization efforts include acquiring new ships, aircraft, and radar systems. These acquisitions aim to improve the military’s ability to monitor and patrol the country’s vast maritime domain, which is crucial for national security.

Despite the challenges posed by the US aid freeze, the DND and AFP remain confident in achieving their modernization goals. They are committed to building a strong and credible defense force, and their dedication is unwavering.

Developing the Philippines’ defense capabilities is crucial for maintaining regional stability. The country faces various security challenges, including territorial disputes in the South China Sea, so a strong defense posture is considered essential.

The DND and AFP are also focusing on improving the welfare of their personnel. This includes providing better training, equipment, and living conditions. The well-being of soldiers is a priority.

The commitment to defense development reflects the Philippine government’s recognition of the importance of national security. A strong defense capability is seen as a deterrent to potential aggression and protects national interests.

The DND and AFP are working closely together to ensure the effective implementation of the modernization program. They are committed to using available resources wisely and efficiently, and coordination is essential for success.
