Canada’s Carney Rebukes Trump Over Tariffs, Sovereignty in High-Stakes D.C. Visit

Politics & Government

Washington, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confronted U.S. President Donald Trump in a tense meeting at the White House, pushing back against escalating tariffs and a controversial proposal for Canada to become the “51st state” of the United States.

The encounter, held amid rising diplomatic strain, focused primarily on U.S. tariffs targeting Canadian aluminum, lumber, and dairy exports measures that have strained one of the world’s closest trade relationships. Carney firmly rejected Trump’s rhetoric, calling it a violation of Canada’s sovereignty and warning of retaliation if economic pressures persist.

Also central to the talks was the U.S. detention of thousands of refugees near the border, some of whom hold legal asylum claims under Canadian law. Carney pressed the U.S. administration to respect bilateral asylum agreements and emphasized the need for humane immigration policy.

Despite the contentious issues, the meeting was notably more civil than past high-profile encounters involving Trump, particularly with European allies. Analysts say Carney’s calm but direct tone avoided further escalation while defending Canadian interests and national dignity.

The White House has not issued a formal statement beyond confirming that discussions are “ongoing.” Canadian media and political leaders have largely praised Carney’s stance.
