MINSK Belarusian authorities have opened a criminal case against 78-year-old pro-democracy activist Nina Bahinskaya, charging her with repeatedly violating laws on organizing protests by publicly displaying the opposition’s white-red-white flag.
Bahinskaya, a retired geologist, became a symbol of the 2020 pro-democracy protests and has remained an outspoken critic of President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime. She now faces up to three years in prison for her actions.
This move is part of an ongoing crackdown on dissent in Belarus, which has seen over 65,000 arrests since 2020, with approximately 1,200 political prisoners still detained. The international community has condemned the regime’s efforts to suppress opposition voices and human rights activists, highlighting the ongoing repression in the country.
