Singapore’s Ruling Party Secures Increased Mandate

Politics & Government

In the 2025 general election, Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) secured an increased mandate, winning 65.6% of the vote and expanding its hold to 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, up from 83 previously. This result solidifies the PAP’s dominance, which has persisted since the country’s independence 60 years ago. Despite recent political scandals and internal divisions, including public disputes between former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his brother Lee Hsien Yang, the electorate favored stability amidst global uncertainties fueled by President Trump’s trade policies. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the importance of continuity in navigating international economic turbulence. The opposition Workers’ Party retained the remaining 10 seats but failed to improve its position significantly. The PAP’s campaign focused on economic consistency and national resilience, while the Workers’ Party appealed to younger voters concerned about issues like housing affordability. Recent challenges to the PAP’s reputation included a bribery scandal involving a former transport minister.
