Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has canceled a planned visit to Saudi Arabia after learning that the United States and Russia held negotiations without consulting Ukraine. This decision reflects Ukraine’s frustration with being excluded from discussions that directly impact its sovereignty and future.
“Peace cannot be achieved by negotiating behind Ukraine’s back,” Zelenskyy stated during a press conference in Ankara. He emphasized that any negotiations affecting Ukraine must involve its leadership and respect its territorial integrity.
The U.S.-Russia talks, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, took place in Saudi Arabia. These discussions aimed to explore potential resolutions to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine but notably did not include Ukrainian representatives.
President Donald Trump expressed optimism about reaching a deal, stating, “We believe a peaceful solution is within reach.” However, Ukrainian officials have expressed skepticism and surprise at their exclusion from these critical talks.
In response to the U.S.-Russia meeting, Zelenskyy outlined specific conditions for any future negotiations. He insisted that the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Turkey be included in the discussions. Additionally, he called for security guarantees and the initiation of prisoner exchanges as prerequisites for meaningful dialogue.
“We will not yield to ultimatums,” Zelenskyy declared, reaffirming Ukraine’s stance against conceding to Russian demands. He also rejected any recognition of territories occupied by Russia as part of Ukraine.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who hosted Zelenskyy in Ankara, expressed support for Ukraine’s position. Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and offered to host future peace talks.
The exclusion of Ukraine from the recent negotiations has raised concerns among European leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to host a meeting focused on Ukraine and European security, aiming to present a united front.
Polish President Andrzej Duda highlighted the importance of U.S. involvement in Eastern European security. He stressed that any agreements made without Ukraine could undermine regional stability and trust among allies.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that the current geopolitical situation is more precarious than during the Cold War. She urged for inclusive and transparent negotiations to prevent further escalation.
The recent U.S.-Russia talks did not address existing U.S. sanctions against Russia. This omission has led to questions about the comprehensiveness of the discussions and their potential impact on the conflict.
